What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is the first FDA-approved drug for androgenetic alopecia (hair loss). Minoxidil was previously used as a vasodilator, prescribed in oral tablets for the treatment of high blood pressure, with the side effects of hair growth and reversal of baldness.

In the treatment of hair loss, minoxidil is applied in the form of a topical solution, which is 2 or 5% minoxidil in propylene glycol. Thanks to the propylene glycol, the applied minoxidil is evenly distributed over the affected area and is thus more easily absorbed through the skin.

How does Minoxidil work?

Minoxidil topical solution is used to stimulate hair growth in people who are balding. The drug has maximum effect against baldness in the crown area of the scalp (the top part of the scalp). The exact way minoxidil works is not completely clear, but it probably stimulates hair growth by improving blood supply to the hair follicles.

What is the scientific evidence for its effectiveness?

Dermatologists conducted a one-year scientific study of 984 men with hair loss. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of 5% topical minoxidil solution for intermittent hair loss and the stimulation of new hair growth. For 1 year, patients applied 1 ml of 5% minoxidil solution twice daily to the affected areas of the scalp.

After 1 year

• Dermatologists report that areas affected by hair loss have become smaller in 62% patients.

• When evaluating the effectiveness of minoxidil in stimulating new hair growth, scientists found that the 5% solution was: very effective in 15.9% of patients, effective in 47.8% and moderately effective in 20.6%.

• At the beginning of the study, an average of 69.7 hairs were lost during washing, and at the end of the study, this number decreased to 33.8 hairs. This is an indicator of the effectiveness of 5% minoxidil against intermittent hair loss in the studied patients.

• Side effects, mostly dermatological, were observed in 3.91% of the patients studied. None were considered serious.

Application:

Apply 1 ml twice daily directly to the scalp in the area of thinning or hair loss. If using your fingers, wash them with soap and warm water. Continued use is necessary to maintain and increase hair growth and prevent re-hair loss.
