D-mannose is a monosaccharide – a simple hexose sugar. Much of D-mannose is excreted in the urine and is part of the body’s natural cleansing process. It helps prevent bladder and urinary tract infections. Once E. coli (Escherichia coli) enters the bladder and urethra, it attaches to the inner lining of the bladder and urethra using cilia called fimbriae. These bind to D-mannose molecules. For this reason, when blood containing D-mannose passes through the kidneys, much of this sugar ends up in the urine and, when excreted, it cleans out any E. coli bacteria it encounters along the way.

D-mannose is safe for long-term continuous use and has no recorded side effects.
