What is Betaine HCL?
Betaine hydrochloride is an acidic form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods.
In fact, it is a vitamin derived from choline, extracted from sugar beets and containing organically bound nitrogen. With a pronounced lipotropic effect, it also helps neutralize lactic acid and reduce the toxicity levels of homocysteine, which is harmful to the body - an intermediate protein product formed in the process of converting the amino acid methionine.
How does Betaine HCL work?
In the stomach, hydrochloric acid converts pepsinogen to pepsin, an enzyme that breaks down proteins into smaller, more easily digestible substances.
People who suffer from stomach and digestive problems often believe that heartburn, indigestion, gas, and reflux are caused by overproduction of stomach acid. This misconception is fueled by doctors who routinely prescribe stomach acid-blocking medications at the slightest sign of stomach upset without properly diagnosing the digestive problem. The symptoms of overproduction of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid – HCL) and underproduction are actually the same. Therefore, it is unwise to jump to conclusions about what is going on in the stomach without an actual examination.
Betaine hydrochloride is recommended as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid for people who have low stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria). This deficiency increases the likelihood of developing certain bacterial and parasitic infections and exacerbates existing infections. Normal stomach acid is sufficient to kill bacteria. One study showed that people who fast have normal stomach acidity and are virtually free of bacteria in the small intestine. Some bacterial colonies in the stomach are found in people who have low levels of hydrochloric acid.
As we age, the secretion of hydrochloric acid can decrease, leading to lower levels of pepsin. Without the necessary amount of pepsin, the body has difficulty digesting food. Betaine hydrochloride is an additional source of hydrochloric acid that can be used by the stomach to produce pepsin. The combination of betaine hydrochloride and pepsin is a wonderful stomach-strengthening agent.
Common symptoms of low hydrochloric acid are:
- Burning in the stomach, especially after eating;
- Bloating or belching, especially after eating;
- Heaviness in the stomach after eating;
- Lifting after eating or taking supplements;
- Chronic candidiasis;
- Poor digestion;
- Bad breath;
- Diarrhea or constipation;
- Food allergies;
- Gas in the stomach;
- Itching around the rectum;
- Weak or broken nails;
- Dilated blood vessels on the cheeks or nose (in people who do not abuse alcohol);
- Skin rashes, acne;
- Iron deficiency;
- Chronic intestinal parasites;
- Undigested food in the stool;
Why should we take Betaine hydrochloride and what is its role in the human body?
The most important role of this substance is detoxification of the body. Betaine effectively protects cells and tissues from dehydration and osmotic inactivation, facilitating the processes of energy storage in the body. Participating in amino acid reactions in the body, it maintains the good condition of the kidneys, liver and heart.
