What is St. John's wort?

St. John's wort, also known as Hypericum perforatum, is the most common herb sold today. This fragrant yellow herb is found throughout Europe and the United States. How its compounds actually work is not yet fully understood, but several theories have been proposed.

What does St. John's wort do?

Preliminary studies suggest that St. John's wort may work by preventing nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing the chemical messenger serotonin or by reducing levels of a protein involved in the functioning of the body's immune system.

How much St. John's wort should be taken?

The standard dose used worldwide for St. John's wort is the same as that used in most of the studies in the British Medical Journal meta-analysis: three doses of 300 mg per day of a preparation containing St. John's wort extract standardized to 0.3% hypericin, usually taken over a period of weeks, months, or often much longer.
