What is it and where does it come from?

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica or urens) has long been known for its tonic properties, and more recently has become known for providing seasonal sinus support.

Stinging nettle is a weed native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The shoots grow from two to three feet to 10 feet tall and thrive in soils high in nitrogen. All nettles sting, but their stinging properties disappear once they are dried or cooked. Used throughout Europe, stinging nettle is a valuable tonic after the long winter months, as it provides a powerful natural source of a number of vitamins and minerals.

Nettles are high in vitamins A and C and are rich in nutrients including calcium, choline, magnesium, boron, iron, iodine, silica, sulfur, potassium, chlorophyll, histamine, serotonin, glucoquinones, bioflavonoids, tannins and amino acids. They are unusually high in protein (40%) for a plant. And because they are so nutrient-rich, they make a good overall tonic to strengthen the body. Useful in treating anemia, their high vitamin C content helps ensure that iron is properly absorbed by the body.

Why should you take it?

Urinary tract health: Nettle has a mild diuretic effect, meaning it can promote the loss of water from the body. Such a diuretic effect may explain why the aboveground parts of nettle were once widely used to treat urinary tract conditions, such as bladder infections. Diuretics are also used to relieve high blood pressure. Recent studies in both humans and laboratory animals confirm that nettle increases urine production. Nettle is still used to relieve conditions such as premenstrual bloating. It is approved in combination with drinking plenty of water for the treatment of urinary tract inflammation and for the treatment and prevention of kidney stones by Commission E of the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, the German government agency that evaluates the safety and effectiveness of herbal products.

Arthritis/Muscle pain: The above-ground parts of nettle have also been used historically to treat muscle pain and arthritis. Nettles may inhibit the body’s production of chemicals that cause inflammation (specifically, tumor necrosis factor-alpha). Therefore, nettles may have anti-inflammatory effects. They also improve immune system responses. The chemicals in nettles are also thought to reduce the sensation of pain or interfere with the way nerves send pain signals. All of these effects reduce pain and stiffness in arthritis and similar conditions. They may also have some value in relieving other inflammatory conditions, such as colitis.

Seasonal allergies: Stinging nettle reduces the amount of histamine that the body produces in response to an allergen. An allergen is a substance, such as pollen, that can provoke an exaggerated immune response in individuals who are sensitive to it. Through this potential action, stinging nettle is useful in reducing allergy symptoms.

How much should be taken?

The typical daily dose ranges from 400-1200 mg. During allergy season, two to three 400 mg capsules can be taken each day.

Method of application: Take 1 capsule, two to three times daily.
