Biovea Borage Oil 1000mg is extracted from the seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis). It is native to Europe and North Africa, but is also cultivated in North America. It is the richest source of the omega-6 essential fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), containing 20-26% GLA. GLA is derived from linoleic acid, also known as an omega-6 fatty acid, which is found in many common vegetable oils such as safflower and sunflower. It is a precursor to extremely important prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that affect blood viscosity, skin, joints, cholesterol levels, the dilation and contraction of blood vessels, inflammatory processes and much more. Although omega-6 is available through food and consumed in large quantities in America, many people are deficient. Scientists believe this is because most oils are hydrogenated, which can prevent the conversion of omega-6 to GLA. Other major dietary sources of GLA include blackcurrant seed oil and evening primrose oil. GLA can be produced in the body from omega-6 fatty acids.
