Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) consists of the amino acid arginine bonded to a molecule of alpha-ketoglutarate. Applied Nutrition's AAKG consists of two molecules of arginine attached to one molecule of alpha-ketoglutarate in a 2:1 ratio.

AAKG is a compound of two molecules of arginine and an alpha-ketoglutarate molecule. Alpha-ketoglutarate acid is a substance (ketone) precursor of the most abundant amino acid in the body – glutamine. It is believed that arginine bound to alpha-ketoglutarate is more easily absorbed than arginine bound to other substances (hydrochloride and malate). Studies conducted on athletes who took 2 g of arginine for 5 weeks showed a significant increase in growth hormone, which not only increases protein synthesis in muscle cells, but also increases their number.

In addition to its many positive effects on athletes, arginine also brings many health benefits - it lowers high blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, neutralizes ammonia, which is formed during the breakdown of amino acids, neutralizes free radicals, increases the body's immune defenses, and improves sexual function.
