What is vitamin B12?

Vitamin B-12 is a vitamin that is important for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system and for blood formation. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell in the body, especially affecting the synthesis and regulation of DNA, but also the synthesis of fatty acids and energy production.

Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is commonly found in a variety of foods, such as fish, shellfish, meat, and dairy products. Vitamin B12 is often used in combination with other B vitamins in a vitamin B complex. It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells, and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 binds to protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B12 from protein during digestion.

The human body stores several years' worth of vitamin B12, so a dietary deficiency of this vitamin is extremely rare. The elderly are most at risk. However, a deficiency can be due to an inability to use vitamin B12. The inability to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract can be caused by a condition known as pernicious anemia. In addition, strict vegetarians or vegans who do not consume sufficient amounts of B12 are also prone to a deficiency state.

Historically, vitamin B-12 was discovered through its association with the disease pernicious anemia, which was eventually discovered to result from an effective lack of this vitamin due to problems with the mechanisms in the body that normally absorb it. Many other more subtle types of vitamin B-12 deficiency and their biochemical effects have since been elucidated.

What is folic acid?

Folic acid, or vitamin B-9, is an essential nutrient that helps your body convert food into usable energy. Folic acid also strengthens your cells, promotes cardiovascular health, alleviates feelings of depression, and improves metabolism.

How does vitamin B12 work?

Vitamin B-12 is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell in the body, particularly affecting the synthesis and regulation of DNA, but also the synthesis of fatty acids and the production of energy. Studies have shown that vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to abnormal neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include: ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, spasticity, incontinence, hypotension (low blood pressure), vision problems, dementia, psychosis and mood disorders. Researchers report that these symptoms can occur when vitamin B12 levels are slightly lower than normal and are significantly above the levels usually associated with anemia. Once released, B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Who should take vitamin B12 and what are the symptoms of deficiency?

People at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency include strict vegetarians, the elderly, and people with increased vitamin B12 requirements associated with pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, hemolytic anemia, hemorrhage, malignancy, liver or kidney disease. Administration of vitamin B12 by mouth, intramuscular, or intranasal administration is effective in preventing and treating nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency.

Signs, symptoms, and health problems associated with vitamin B12 deficiency include anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Deficiency can also lead to neurological changes such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Additional symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency include difficulty maintaining balance, depression, confusion, dementia, poor memory, and soreness in the mouth or tongue.

Directions: For adults, take one full dropper (1 ml) under the tongue daily after meals. Shake well before use.
