What is vitamin B12 and how does it work?
Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that supports normal brain and nervous system function and aids in the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is involved in every metabolic cell in the body, particularly affecting the synthesis and regulation of DNA, but also the synthesis of fatty acids and energy production.
Commonly found in a variety of foods such as: fish, shellfish, meat and dairy products, Vitamin B12 is often used in combination with other B vitamins in a vitamin B complex to optimize health and well-being.
Why should you take vitamin B12 complex?
Studies have shown that vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to abnormal neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms can include: ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, spasticity, incontinence, hypotension (low blood pressure), vision problems, dementia, psychosis, and mood disorders. Researchers report that these symptoms can occur when vitamin B12 levels are slightly lower than normal and significantly above the levels typically associated with anemia. Once released, vitamin B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before being absorbed into the bloodstream.
Who should take vitamin B12 and what are the symptoms of deficiency?
People at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency include strict vegetarians, the elderly, and people with increased vitamin B12 requirements associated with pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, hemolytic anemia, hemorrhage, malignancy, liver or kidney disease. Administration of vitamin B12 by mouth, intramuscular, or intranasal administration is effective in preventing and treating nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency.
Symptoms associated with vitamin B12 deficiency include anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, soreness in the mouth or tongue, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Deficiency can also lead to neurological changes such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, difficulty maintaining balance, depression, confusion, dementia, and poor memory.
Why should you take methylcobalamin B12 instead of cyanocobalamin B12?
Methylcobalamin is the more effective form of vitamin B12 as it is better absorbed by the body and specifically helps the nervous system, brain and liver. Vitamin B12 complex also combines B6, folic acid and biotin for more comprehensive support.
The reason the cyanocobalamin version of B12 is less effective is that it must be removed during a multi-step, time-consuming process, and this reduces its nutritional availability and effectiveness.
Directions: Take 1 tablet daily. For best results, allow the tablet to dissolve in your mouth before swallowing.
