ALLNUTRITION XYLITOL is a naturally occurring compound classified as a polyol. It occurs naturally as a component of the fibrous and woody elements of many plants, including fruits and vegetables, and the birch tree from which it was first obtained, hence the name birch sugar.

Xylitol looks like regular sugar and tastes similar. However, the similarities end there. The differences arise in the stages of absorption and metabolism. Xylitol, when ingested, does not cause a significant glucose or insulin response. Therefore, it is recommended for people with insulin metabolism disorders, e.g. diabetics. Moreover, xylitol is sweeter than sugar and at the same time less caloric (1g xylitol is only 2.4 kcal, 1g sucrose – 4 kcal), so dishes sweetened with it have a lower energy value.

For people on a diet, xylitol allows for easy weight control. It delays gastric emptying, which increases the feeling of fullness and thus reduces overall food intake. Xylitol does not ferment in the digestive tract like glucose, fructose or sucrose. It is also important that xylitol, unlike table sugar, does not damage teeth and can even help fight cavities.
